The Sundial is a project that was developed as part of a competition for sustainable building within a nature reserve. In order to achieve the smallest possible footprint of the building, the decision was made to design the building without fixed foundations, as a floating body on the water. In order to generate energy from the sun as efficiently as possible, the part of the roof with the solar modules can be pivoted and can thus adapt to the position of the sun. To take this principle to the extreme, it was also decided to make the building itself rotatable. This is made possible by an outer façade ring that is anchored to the bottom of the lake. This façade ring is connected to the interior room structure with ball bearings, which means that the interior rooms, together with the roof, can align themselves with the sun, turning the whole project into a kind of sundial.
